I don't have any direct experience with Fossati oboes.
I've had 2 Fossati English horns and the one I currently play (profressional model) is wonderful, I got it (slightly) used for $5500 US; the other one was the 'sub-professional' model and quite acceptable for community-symphony level stuff.
Like every brand, including the coveted Loree, there will be superb instruments and ones that don't suit you. I hope you are willing to try other brands; there are some really good oboes but you have to find the one that best suits your playing, or one that 'challenges' you to play better. Have you a teacher who could give you some direction? Have you tried out your friend's instrument to see if your hands are comfortable on the keys?
If price is a consideration, do think about buying a used instrument. I'm not sure what's available in Oz but I would rather pay shipping and try several instruments out than to buy a new one that wasn't IT for me.
