One way of making the whole thing less calliope-ish is to have well-placed accents, interesting dynamics, and subtle variations in articulation.

Edit: I just sat down with the exercise and found it plenty challenging at dotted half = 63. I'm sure if you did it perfectly at that tempo your teacher would be well pleased.
