 Kohlert Sons oboe

I'm still trying to date at least approximately the oboe that I had restored.

I'm not sure what the key system is (is it Triebett system?) The intonation seems to be the same as my modern oboe, but the fingering for some notes is different.

The Kohlert oboe is noticably shorter than my modern oboe (approx. 1.5 - 2 inches shorter).

The Kohlert oboe is similar to the one in the attached pic (but in much better shape!)

Any ideas? Thank you!

It's a simple system (based on Triebert System 4) with automatic 8ves and only goes to low B with a short bell.

Just looking up simple system oboes in Anthony Baines' book mentions some cross fingerings are better than the keyed fingerings (which he mentions are mainly used for trills and fast passages) which I've copied here:

(lower register)
C - oxo|ooo (N.B. on German instruments, oxo|xxo)

(upper register w/o 8ve key)
(A - xxo|xxxC)
Bb - xxo|xxxEb (Eb key is sometimes not necessary)
B - xox|xxxEb (Eb key is sometimes not necessary)
C - oxx|xxo

Thank you, that is very helpful!

I have been experimenting with this oboe, it is certainly from another (earlier) time, it has such an easy response and a rather dark tone compared to my modern oboe, and the fingering system is different (indeed, the entire oboe is shorter in length by almost 2" from my modern oboe, and the blowholes are situated completely differently than a modern oboe.)

I've come to the conclusion that it is a Kohlerts & Sons somewhere pre-1938, and I'm still flabbergasted that is has cleaned up so well with no cracks and is still so playable.

Definitely a keeper.
Thanks again!
