Yeah ... Yamaha's my fave just now ... although could change later ... as a renewed oboe player first on a borrowed Olds Ambassador ... does anybody have any history on this, would like to know anything about this line ... and then renting Yamaha 411, I do like it better ... a lot easier to play (blow & get good notes) which reduces lots of frustration for beginners and developing students ... and apparently pro players too ...
My list of LIKES for this instrument is much too long for this space ... I'm highly impressed with it just now, although if I get lucky enough to try a Covey or Loree (etc.) maybe I'd change my mind ...
... my "peeves" with it are relatively superficial & highly personal preferences ... but maybe helpful ideas to some of you out there
... there isn't a protective metal band around the bell, widest part of the instrument, wood subject to getting damaged more easily, much better if protected by metal ... if plastic who cares?
... doesn't have fully automatic octave keys, a boon for the novice player
still fumbling around, and still a boon later on for fast playing work
... nice round-cornered but minimalist case doesn't have enough space for reed case and cork grease and swob silk or feather, all essential basic gear in one place
... the tone-hole keys are too smooth, there isn't enough surface friction to keep fingertips in place when they're sweating or still a bit cold, or skin's too dry ...
