 Voss oboe?
Author: JesusFreke

Hello! I was curious if anyone had any info on "voss" oboes.. My father had bought a used one to recondition/repair a number of years ago, but never finished it. I thought I would take a stab at it, and I'm just curious about the maker.. I tried googling it, but couldn't find any hits for a voss oboe. "Voss" is printed on both parts of the oboe (except the bell), and there's a serial number at the bottom of the top piece. I couldn't find any model number.

Any info would be appreiated!
Ben

There was a German chap that did work experience at Howarth called Christian Voss.

I think he set up his own workshops in Germany after he was with us, but that was around 2001.

Got any photos?

I don't recall exactly when my father bought this.. I think it was around 1999... Maybe 2003 though (either HS or college graduation).. so I'm not sure if its the Christian Voss that you are thinking of.

It's a German-built oboe and has the usual German keywork specification - fully automatic 8ves, roller F key, low B-C link and conservatoire 1-2-3 mech (closing any RH fingers will give Bb and C).

Have you got any photos of the bell?

As for the maker - not really sure, but very typical of German makers and probably from one of the major German makers. I'll have a look around to see if there are any makes that look similar.
