All 4 students play well for German clarinetist and composer Jorg Widmann in this memorable master class. Widmann speaks English to them and English captions are provided. So much here is rare and valuable. Widmann as both composer and player loves the compositions of Weber and Schumann and refuses to see them as just warhorse pieces for clarinet. Plus he gets to comment as only a composer can on his own piece, the Fantasy for Clarinet. Three of my favorite comments out of dozens of wise observations he makes: "It is always good to know what problems we do NOT have" (so we can practice something else we really need to practice!) "When you play, nobody [is going to jump in and help you]; you have to do it yourself." ""You are all really musicians; you play with real FANTASY."

Hearing the big, resonant sound he makes on his Wurlitzer Oehler clarinet is another bonus. His tonal variability is admirable, as he goes from German dark to Buffet-like vibrant. All his critical comments avoid self-aggrandizement and are really helpful to the young players. He shares lessons he has learned with them rather than talking down or preaching.
