"Has anybody heard this piece played as I have described; as a very long solo in an orchestral piece with the clarinet solo playing it from his usual seated position in the orchestra?"
It was also played by Vladimir Krasavin, with Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under famous soviet-era conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky.
There is a recording on youtube, but of course only the audio part, probably made during a concert.
The recording does not say who the soloist is. Vladimir Krasavin, who was the principal clarinet at the time, told me that he had performed it with the orchestra.
I don't know if it was performed from the usual clarinet sitting position or in front of the orchestra- I would think later.
