 Identifying a Clarinet Solo
Author: cottmj77

Hey all,

I am trying to ID a clarinet solo I played in college. It was clarinet and piano and the beginning featured clarinet by itself, quietly. Then the clarinet plays into an open grand piano very loudly...

It's a contemporary composition and I believe the title or the composer starts with B.

Thanks for any help!

Matt

Alban Berg 'Four Pieces'

Don't think so.

Berg never has the clarinettist play into the piano, although there is a place here he has the pianist silently depress keys so the strings can sympathetically vibrate.

It wasnt Berg. The beginning is quite soft and then, all of a sudden, the clarinet plays a low chalumeau E into the piano.

I'm not sure if this is your piece, but could it have been by Peter Sculthorpe?

A couple years ago I attended a Richard Stoltzman recital, and he played a Sculthorpe work (possibly Songs of Sea and Sky). At one point, Stoltzman got up and played into the open grand piano.

That does not sound familiar, unfortunately. Maybe I will contact the new professor of clarinet there and see if he has the music library Dr. Jahn had.

I want to say the composer had a short name and the piece was one movement only.

Do you know a few of the opening notes?
