 German Band Music

In another thread, Don Berger mentioned having several collections of 5-piece German band books. I presume that he was talking about the "Hungry Five" series from Hansen House, but I'm interested to know if there is any other music in this format. (I also have Hansen's "Hungry Five Plays Ragtime")

The Hungry Five format works really well, with 2 clarinets, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, and 1 tuba. If anyone else publishes for this instrumentation, I'd like to find out about them.

The Hungry Five is apparently an Americanized instrumentation, and I found nothing available to match it, even at Munich's biggest sheet music store. German instrumentation is different and even those arrangements are scarce. A number of catalogs were mailed to me, with little or no music of this type.

I'd like to know more about what people are finding around the US.

Allen - There's nothing like a guy's name in print to attract his attention!! Yes, I found 3 sets of small group books, may have more, will hunt. They are the visible remains of our German band [from a concert band] a few ? years ago in Durango, CO, much fun, ah, memories!! Yes, Hungry Five In Germany, cl 1 and 2, tpt, tmb, Eb bass , pub. Ch Hansen ; Whoopee John, 17 books [lots of possibilities], pub.Vitak-Elsnic Co. Downers Grove, IL ; Little German Band Book, same pub. 17 books also. Have a bit of "special occasion" 3-5 player music such as for Chr. etc. 'Nuff for now? Regards, Don

Thanks Don, I'll investigate these publications.

The only source of Hungry Five instrumentation that I found in Germany is Georg Bauer in Karlsruhe. Each song is a separate arrangement (most by Herbert Ferstl) at a whopping 30 DM. (I'm thinking about $17 US) A CD containing all their titles is available for the same price.

I think I paid less than that for my Hungry Five books from Hansen.

I found those Vitak-Elsnic books still available on the web. Did you use the Whooppe John and the Little German Band book with a Hungry Five sized group or did you use larger instrumentation?

Its been a while since the Durango Band, we did use the books here a couple times [in OK] with just 5 of us, in Dgo, I believe we supplemented by doubling the Hungry 5's, and adding others to fill out the parts and "registers" of the bigger books in which we tooted!! Lots of fun, have some, Regards, Don

I am looking for a place to obtain a set, or copies, of the Hungry Five in Germany. I purchased a set a few years from Hanson House. Unfortunately I stored them someplace so good that I can no longer find them. I understand that the Hungry Five in Germany is now out of print and Hanson has no plans to make them available in the future. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Playing the "Hungry Five" arrangements for a German club in college went fine but the jokes were a little bit too corny for them.

Example: "Otto, did you shave this morning?" "Vell, next time stand closer to der razor!"
