Hello GBK [Glenn],
I have never seen a photo of Artie Shaw, so I assume the picture you displayed is of the man himself with his Selmers? If so I am intrigued: are the keys gold-plated and which model Selmer did he play - the lighting in the photo is such that I cannot be sure. I ask because my Selmer full Boehm] CT [which I recently mentioned in another post] is gold plated and I am trying to find out more about my instrument and its history.

Although Artie mostly played a Selmer on his most well known recordings, the two clarinets that the Smithsonian have are a Selmer and a Buffet.
Although it's not that apparent in the photo, Artie always had the LH Eb/Bb sliver key removed and the hole plugged because he felt the key "got in the way".
BTW - He also endorsed the Conn Constellation 44N(?) clarinet but didn't play one on the bandstand.

I noticed the missing LH sliver keys too - confirms what I'd heard previously. Having fat fingers myself led to lots of squeaking from just catching the key with the side of the finger until I did the same (initially a piece of cork under the key, and then having the hole fiilled next time it goes to a tech). I reckoned anything that is good enough for Artie Shaw is good enough for me! It's such a relief not worrying about the squeak (well, that cause anyway).

It's funny that I still have LP 33 1/3 records of Artie Shaw [and the Carnegie hall Concerts with Goodman and friends] up in the attic from when I was an enthusiastic novice player in the 1960s, but have no recollection of ever seeing a photo of Artie Shaw.
As for keys getting in the way: with age and having had many operations on my hands I find that quite a few keys "get in the way" nowadays and some even go completely missing so I end up playing "air" clarinet!
