Hi, I am an intermediate player searching for a new clarinet, or I should say used. I am a stay at home mom of 3 so I am sorry to say I cannot afford a $4000 horn or even $400 horn. I was looking for a buffet as I had a E11 in school and went to a few solo competitions and honor band etc. However I never really learned about instruments. My teacher just recommended a clarinet that another teacher had for sale and it happened to be a decent one.
Anyway, I am looking for an intermediate clarinet I think. I'm not sure what to buy. I have seen a "Pedler" for sale on ebay that is wood and appears to be in good shape, there is a Ridenour 147? that the seller claims is wood but appears to be rubber to me and everything I read says this model is a rubber clarinet. I have also seen a buffet ca. 1946 that is pretty and looks to be in good shape on ebay. I have also considered going with a lesser clarinet and investing in a good mouthpiece. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? My price range is maybe $200 max. I can get a clarinet that maybe needs some work and get it overhauled at a later date.

Do you still have the E-11? If you do, that's your best bet.
If not, finding something good for less than $200 might be difficult. You could get a used Vito in that price range, nice instruments for beginners or for marching band.
If you want a slightly better clarinet and are able to spend up to a few hundred more, you could probably find a Selmer Series 10, LeBlanc Bliss, or intermediate Yamaha.

I'd recommend a Vito V40. They are very decent horns and you should be able to find one in good shape that works for your $200 budget.

I came across a couple old wood Pedlers during my many years as a band teacher, and these clarinets were worn-out and nothing special.
The company has been out of business for a long time, and if I were in your position, I'd pass on it. However, I could be very wrong. It might be a decent instrument that wasn't played much, and with a little work, it might become a great clarinet for the money.

Pedlers are kind of way out of date and used up. Stay with the others, referring to Selmer's and maybe Vito's. Look at it this way. You will spend a lot money in a year or 2 , maybe 3 years on reeds. A good horn can last 10 to 15 years and still hold their value, meaning that what you pay now you may be able to sell it for about the same price later on.

A used Vito as mentioned above would be a good deal, but in good shape, probably more than you can spend.
My suggestion is to call Ted Ridenour and explain what you are needing. They may have a used model 576 or 146 or the short lived Speranza (very good) on hand. And they can probably can arrange an easy no interest payment plan.
I like the E11 just fine, a little free blowing for me, but they sound very good. Be sure to get the German made version with secure key posts.
You can get very fine student MPs for less than 40 dollars from Hite, Fobes, Ridenour, Behn and McClune. So, you need not, at this point budget 100 or more dollars on a MP.

thanks everyone for all the info. I have one more question, are all Buffet B12s composit, plastic etc? I found a lady in town that has a buffet that she says is a B12 but it is wood. Havent gone to see it yet. she thinks its older, has serial number in the 50,000s

Evette & Schaeffer is a good intermediate wood clarinet. I play an Opus. Got the E&S for a long. My E&S is believed to have been made during the Malerne period and is equivalent I'm told to a Buffet E-11. Nice action, easy to play. I haven't played it in a while, but yesterday I picked it up again and it still plays well. Keys stick a little. But overall, good instrument.
Did you check the classified section. You can sometimes get a good deal there. Also ebay.

On a very limited budget, I would consider looking at the student model Yamaha clarinets. You can likely find used ones at a very reasonable price. They play very well and would get the job done. You can also add in a Fobes Debut mouthpiece that is very inexpensive, but a great player.
