 Value of Mouthpiece Exercises
Author: bbillings

I was looking at the JazzLab mouthpiece silencer and they are touting the value of mouthpiece only exercises. I play clarinet, bass clarinet and am working on playing saxophone. This device now has different setups for all the above included in the price. Has anyone utilized mouthpiece specific exercises? Do they have great value above and beyond just practicing using the instrument?

I hope this is obvious, but to mine or to other people's development as a player!

In case my own opinion isn't obvious, I don't think there's any need for mouthpiece exercises. It may be useful for some players looking to solve specific problems to test their pitch on an open mouthpiece, But repeated exercise with a device attached isn't, in my personal opinion, necessary or important.

I got the joking, despite the flat effect of text and value your opinion. It was my suspicion that there traditionally has been little use of mouthpiece only exercises. My brief internet search came up with only one review and that was from a dealer in the UK. I wanted to see if there are any proponents of these exercises here where I value the opinions (taken with liberal grains of salt)
