Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique Eb solo changes?
Author: PeterinToronto 2017

Hi everyone,

Looking at the traditional Clarinet 1 part to this, and the 1972 revised version, there are some changes. The most notable of these is in the famous Eb solo in the final movement: there appear to be 7 added grace notes and 1 missing trill from the usual way I hear this played. I can't find any recordings that seem to match this revision, does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,

Peter

Yes, I have noticed several versions of that solo, each with different places for trills and grace notes. My plan is to go with the version that Peter Hadcock has in his "Orchestral Studies for the Eb Clarinet". That is what I plan to do, lacking any objections from the conductor, when I play the piece next Spring. You might also check the New York Philharmonic web site for their scans of the parts played there to see what they did.

Whose edition is the 1972 revision?

There are 2 versions of this, an original version and a revision made by Berlioz. The revision is the one most commonly played. If you hear cornet solos in the 2nd mvt. you are hearing the revision.

We've done it both ways in the Baltimore Symphony, Our standard part is the way most orchestras play it on recordings. Sometimes a conductor would bring in their own parts and once or twice it was the newer version.

Thanks a lot for the replies! The revised or different part is by Barenreiter, it has an edition number of 5781, and an additional designation of "Breitkopf and Hartels Orchester-Bibliothek Nr.4929".

Appreciate the clarifications!

Peter
