 Need info on ARGONAUT clarinet
Author: Mark
Date:   2002-10-05 18:24

I have a clarinet that I received as a gift from my father in the early 1950's. It is marked "ARGONAUT" and "MADE IN ITALY". The number "169" is stamped in both of the keyed sections. It is made of wood, ebony I was told, and weighs a little over 1-1/2 pounds.

It needs some repair, and I would like to know more about it. I learned to play it without lessons, but, naturally, never became really good (I had piano and accordian lessons, ended up being fair on the harmonica).

Does anyone have any ideas about how I can find out what company in Italy made it, and whether they are still in business? Are parts interchangeable among different brands? -- the repair may require replacement of the section-bridging mechanism.

I suspect this is a high-end student clarinet, since the case is not at all fancy. Trying to decide whether to pass it on to my grandson, especially since another note here says a wood clarinet is too heavy for youngsters. The only alternative would be to sell it.

DD,

I noticed a month or so, you got into the Klezmer group by mistake. Is this post about San Diego (I assume the Chargers or Padres) the same type "accident?"

I'm trying to picture baseball/football and an Arogonaut clarinet.

Well, maybe Gary was right (he's the fellow left the message just after I put mine in -- about leaving the site since it wasn't very useful or enjoyable any more.

I admit that all three responses to my request for information were total non-sequitors, and hence useless to me, and a considerable letdown as I see the response count, become happy and excited, and then get to find a discussion about a football game.

I'm not making any judgments about the site, after all, it's only participants who can't control themselves, and I've only been here a week. However, I am still interested in finding out about this clarinet. If someone can help, besides the post here, perhaps you could send a short mail to markg@vizbot.com.

I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Hi Mark,

Since one of the useless responses was mine, let me explain why I said what I did about DD's San Diego comment. When I saw that DD's message was not to answer your question but to tout a San Diego ball club, I suspected that he may have responded to your message in error, in the same mannner that he erroneously did to another BB last month.

I'm sorry that I could not give you an ARGONAUT clarinet response. Obviously there is no one else that has the information you seek.

Hank

PS I assure that I can control myself. You need to lighten up a little.

Hank --

You're right of course -- I was writing in the midst of disappointment and was quite rude. I apologize for including you in the non-control group. You were actually trying to help DD, and your response was an attempt to get him to step aside and leave the thread open for real answers.

And, I appreciate your time in speaking back to me. It's so easy to just step aside and let things go. I'm sorry you don't have information, but neither does anyone else, it seems.

Perhaps you do know of a site where I could find pointers about what to look for in judging whether this clarinet has any quality or not. I'm believing it's a high-end student instrument.

Thanks again for your time, I much appreciate it, and look forward to any information you might have, and again, please forgive.

Mark

If you can't find information here then it's quite possible (and very probable) that there is no information to be had.

Tone down, too. I don't need any more rudeness on this BBoard, and will not tolerate any. The better part of discretion in this case is silence.

Also, use private email for private conversations.

Hi Mark,

Apology graciously accepted; end of concern on my part.

However, I do think you are in the right spot for the information you need. The sad part is that there may not be any real trace on the clarinet.

Alhough the instrument probably has great sentimental value to you, I suspect that your clarinet might be one of the many stencil brands (made by one manufacturer but with another name) of foreign origin that have come to this country.

Perhaps another will be able to solve your ARGONAUT caper.

Cheers,

Hank

Mark - I can't help you out on the Argonaut, but there is one currently listed on the Goodwill auction pages, don' know if that will be of any help though...
