Upon some reflection MY hypothesis is that you were forced to move your lips around the bulky appliances and the end result was using (correctly!) more lip musculature FROM ABOVE as the sides and bottom. So now what you may want to do is RE-emphasise the use of your upper lip (maybe even dabble with double lip embouchure just for snicks) until you are used to presenting even pressure ALL around the mouthpiece.
