autumnsilence,

Gordon's advice is right on the money. Ignore it at your own risk. Advising others to ignore it is NOT doing them a favor.

There are certainly some legitimate operations advertising on the internet. The trick is finding one because no matter how good the website looks, any information you receive from it or the company that set it up is not independent of the source. They want your money. They can tell you anything. And some will. There is also no necessary correlation between the quality of the website and the quality of the work done. And when the repair shop is that far away, you're stuck with what you get back -- if you get anything back.

Remember that most really good repair techs have enough local word of mouth business that they do not need to advertise on the internet.

There was an episode reported on this Board a few years ago about a repair facility with an impressive website with detailed information about the work done and quick responses to questions. The owner even had a good reputation in the business.

But read this for a true horror story and then ask yourself if you want to go through the same thing:

http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=183647&t=183461

BTW, I just checked and guess what? The website is still up. Still looking great.

I would recommend that, if you are going to send your instrument hundreds or thousands of miles away for repair, make %#$@ sure the folks you shipped it to are going to send it back. And make %#$@ sure they are going to do the job right. It's a lot easier to do that than to try to recover the instrument long-distance later.

Best regards,
jnk
