I know I'm late to the party, but since I just went through a reed search like yours I wanted to share. I used VD V12s for quite a while, but started trying a bunch of others because of cost and because I began to suspect there had to be something better than Vandorens out there. Most of the Ricos turned out to be as unimpressive as I expected (IMO, especially don't waste your money on Rico Reserves), but the GC think blank was a nice surprise -- a solid, responsive reed that works well with my M-13 mouthpiece, and I found more usable reeds per box than with VD. If you're used to VDs, the 3.5 thick blank will feel a little soft and bright. I use them for jazz pieces and I've switched to Zondas for chamber music.
Oh, one caveat -- they do get mushy a little more quickly than Vandorens.
