 German Clarinets
Author: pevvey

Im looking for some Geraman clarinets with a reform Boehm system. Probably Schwenk and Seggelke, Wurlitzer, Dietz or other such makers.

Obviously these are quite pricey first hand, so does anyone know a good second hand source, or even if these type of instruments ever come up second hand?

Do any other makers apart from the German companies make a reform boehm style?
Thanks

The only non-german companies that make german style clarinets is Yamaha, and I think that Steve Fox also offers a Reform Boehm model.

I once tried to purchase a Yamaha pro-level Oehler system horn, but ran into stone walls at every turn. It was almost as if they didn't want to bother for such a sale, despite my attempts to contact their German arm directly. Go figure.

Oddly enough, I've had nothing but the best of luck dealing with them as far as their saxophone line is concerned.

Secondhand RBs do turn up occasionally, but if they're from one of the top makers and in good nick, you'll still be looking at a hefty price tag...

There have been a few H. Wurlitzer RBs in the Classifieds on this site over the past couple of years - one just a few weeks back. The German site Vioworld has a secondhand section; mostly Oehlers, but occasionally you'll see RBs there. Schwenk & Seggelke also sells secondhand instruments...

I play RBs from one of the top makers. They are fine instruments, but not necessarily better than a fine French clarinet, just different - it's swings and roundabouts.

(If you do find one, check the pitch - I have a friend who bought a magnificent set of Fritz Wurlitzers in London years ago, they played very high)

Hey, good question. Because the better horns are initially more expensive new , they are comparatively more expensive used. Try Thomas Reichle in Berlin ( thomas.reichle@holzblaeser.com ) carries new and used. Also try Musical Chairs ( http://www.musicalchairs.info/ ) under the Instument Sales section - also good site to check out openings stateside and abroad.

...............Good luck,

Louis Rossi makes reformed Boehm

There is a Frank Hammerschmidt Boehm system German bore pair for sale at Howarth in London for 1325 pounds

I had a look at those last time I was in London, and I've just sent the Oehlers back up to London after trying them out over the last 2-3 weeks.

My Yamaha Oehler (657-24) isn't as resonant as the Wurlitzers, though it's still a good clarinet.

I found out today Harald Hüyng was a former Wurlitzer employee. http://www.hueyng.de/
