A little off topic - Australia help
Author: contragirl
Date:   2005-06-10 23:11

I know this is off topic, but my boyfriend and I (and maybe some other friends) are considering doing a work abroad type of thing in Australia. Ideally, Sydney.

The deals are that you go with this company where you pay $500 (plus flight costs) and they will hook you up with the work visa and such for 4 months to work and live in Australia. Obviously, you pay the rent and food, etc etc while you work.

But I wanted to find out more information about living and working in Austrailia from some real Aussies.

I guess to make this more relavent, I would like to actually continue to play, so how is the availability of community bands/orchestras in the area?

Has anyone ever tried living abroad?

Aussies, email me personally so I can get a more private question session. :)

Thanks,
Contragirl

EDIT: SEE LOOK, I DID IT. Geeeez

Learning the lingo would be a great help for you.

Contragirl,

What are you getting for the $500? Make the visa application yourself...
Go to www.immi.gov.au and save!

If you're here for a while, I look forward to meeting you. And I hope sincerely that it works out well.

I can't speak for Sydney too much but at least here in Melbourne there's plenty of opportunity. We have a very good symphonic band, the Grangier Wind Symphony as well as a very active clarinet and saxophone society.
Check out clasax.org for starters.
Good luck, I haven't met anyone, visitor or local, who doesn't like Australia!

Contragirl, I know that we are not supposed to correct spelling mistakes, but in your own interest, it would be better to spell Australia without adding an "i" before the "l". I see John Kelly has already dropped a hint.

''[ To all: Correcting the spelling in the title of the thread before responding, would have been the proper thing to do - GBK ]"

How is this achieved?

Contra, you'll have no problem in Sydney (I'm a Sydneysider), there are many community based musical societies including marching bands and concert bands, orchestras ... take your pick. But Melbourne is also worth the effort and you can fly domestically between the capital cities cheaply if you book ahead.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
