I don't think there is still a store like Woodwind and Brasswind used to have in South Bend, IN. It was great to be able to play dozens of instruments in a day.
Meridian in Okemos, MI (near Lansing) is 60 miles from me and I end up going there a handful of times every year. 8 years ago or so, I went there with a friend to pick out a pair of clarinets for her father, and had a great time helping spend $8000 of somebody else's money. The repair techs are very good (I am on a 1st name basis with them all).
I bought a new clarinet 45 years ago from Long & McQuade in Toronto. It may be more complicated now doing this and bringing the instrument back into the states.
Taplin-Weir also in Toronto seems to have a good stock and they have experience shipping back to the US.
Especially: Look at who is advertising now in The Clarinet magazine.
