5JB joint too long to fit in barrel?

I'm quite the beginner still so bear with me :)
As the subject says; got myself a new mouthpiece (Vandoren 5JB) but it seems to be a bit too long joint to fit in my barrel? There's a small gap when between the barrel and the mouthpiece which I don't get when using the original mouthpiece. It's an old SML clarinet from the 60's. Will this affect the sound at all, making it a bit flat as the clarinet gets a couple of millimeters longer? Or
