I would like to offer a 2022 update on this horn . My wife got one recently and is very pleased with its tone , evenness and natural tunning. The key work is pretty solid ( not going to bend under normal use ) and is a nice tight fit . A few pivot screws were lose and this creates quite a lot of end play indicating a not very precise fit between the screw tip and hole in the rod . I think that this is a good instrument ....but only once you get it properly into regulation which is where it's failings seem to lie . I found that pretty much everything that requires regulation required regulation . This was reasonably strieghtforward on the upper joint ...the adjustment screws here are very handy . The bottom joint however required a lot of work . The three adjustment screws that depress the cups for low D-D# are soft brass and already came with chewed-up slots . I had to extract them, replacing them with Allen-key screws I tipped with epoxy . The screws it comes with are basically not fit for purpose . The crow's foot and its companion damper- link spacers were felt , which makes proper regulation between these keys impossible and I don't trust it for holding regulation anyway . The crow' foot itself is too solid for making any bending adjustments. There was something nasty on the sliding lifter spurs of the low D-D# which was falling off and I had to replace it with Teflon strips . Anyone that can get the alternative LH pinky mechanism to close the chain of pads with positivity is a better man than me .....its lacks the mechanical advantage unless the pads are very precisely floated in ( which they're not !)Once in proper regulation however , I think this is an instrument with pretty spectacular performance. I don't see anything to suggest it won't hold regulation ( I should maby offer an update on that after military service testing !) . Being so very much cheaper than the ' pro' basses , it still has a lot going for it . It's principal down side being the probable work to get it set up properly, so before getting one , I think it's wise to be prepared for that extra cost and that you in fact have a tech who will accept the challenge because there will be some swearing involved .
