I learned how to tie a string (shoelace) ligature many, many years ago when I was playing for a summer in Austria. I can still do it and get the reed in place almost as fast as I can with a modern metal, leather or plastic ligature. But the "Klassik" string ligature from Vandoren -- not often talked about or promoted that much, as far as I can tell -- is also an excellent option and I now us it almost all the time.
