Isn't gold plating usually just a few microns thick? I've had a few Bonades over the years and I've never seen two that were similar enough in the details of their construction that I'd attribute any differences in playing characteristics to a few microns of plating. Different amounts of solder under the rails, the screw receiver and guide being differently aligned, the spacing of the rails varying a little, the rails never being perfectly parallel, the shape of the metal between the rails (on inverted ligatures), the cleanliness of the threads, etc.
I'm not saying any of those are making or breaking a ligature, really. I just think those would all be confounding factors that would prevent us from ever determining what differences were caused only by the plating.
It doesn't surprise me that a gold plated Bonade and a nickel plated Bonade will play a little differently if you really try to find a difference. A nickel plated Bonade and a nickel plated Bonade will also probably play a tiny bit differently from one another.
