Paul, your point about lack of risk of cross contamination if no one but the owner is touching the instrument is well taken, and one I have already brought up with the powers that be in the band. And it makes no sense to worry about that when the use of bell covers on clarinets was not even mentioned in the band's proposed protocol. But those are different issues than the question I initially raised here.

For the sake of information, an outdoor setting with 6 feet distancing (9 for trombones) is what is under discussion for our band. I guess there are a lot of people in the band who are itching to get the band playing again. It's yet to be seen whether anything will actually come of this discussion - or whether I will be participating if they do decide to start playing. It sort of sounds like going back to college marching band days. Not the most musically satisfying.

I did finally get an answer to my initial question from one of the top techs who sometimes posts here (who shall remain nameless because I don't want to speak for him, and he can chime in on his own if he wishes). He advised me to absolutely NOT use any alcohol, disinfectant or sanitizer on a wood clarinet body or bore. Since he's the one who overhauled three of my best clarinets, that's the advice I'm going by and that I'll pass on to the other clarinetists in our band.
