Hello, just wondering if anyone knows what the effect of the mouth pad thickness does to how you play. I have been constantly using clear thin Vandoren mouth pads and want to know what is the difference in getting a thick one.
Have been playing for 6-7 years now and I do not know this knowledge.

I'd have to say that the main difference is that I find the thin plastic ones more slippery than the thicker rubber ones. I play double lip but still use the patches to keep the mouthpiece from slipping around.
When I was younger, before I switched to double lip, I used mouthpiece pads because when I put my teeth directly on the mouthpiece I got shooting pain up through my teeth. The thinner pads allowed more vibration to come through, hence still some pain. The thicker ones were better at protecting my teeth from the vibrations.
But, really, the pads aren't expensive. A few US$ will buy a half dozen or more. Your best answer will come from buying a small package of the thicker ones (I like the Runyon black ones, but the Vandoren patches I'm currently using are fine) and trying them for yourself.

I use the thin Vandoren pads and the normal single lip embochure. I found that the thick ones made my tone sound muffled (loss of upper harmonics?). I did not record the playing, so I don't know whether this is a real effect or some difference that only I (the player) hear. I've heard that the player hears much of the sound via his teeth, so maybe that's the reason for the muffled sound using a thick pad.
I also play alto and tenor sax, and use the thick pads. The reduced teeth pressure and lower frequencies of the sax notes may be why I don't notice the effect on the saxes.
