Does anyone know of a source for extended floor pegs to be used with a low C bass clarinet (Selmer) while standing?

Easy and cheap to make with a piece of 7mm stainless steel rod of the appropriate length (buy online) with one end rounded and the other capped with a rubber cello spike protector.

You can also make one out of a wood dowel. Get a 5/8” diameter hardwood dowel from Home Depot, etc. Then purchase a 5/8” rubber cap on line. Cut to desired length. Drill a 7 mm hole in the end of it. Flip your metal peg around or take its rubber end off to slide the wood extension on it.

One advantage is that you can easily slide it off to place your bass or contra on an instrument stand.

Drilling the hole straight is the hardest part but it will still work if a little crooked.

I don't remember because it's been a while since I've measured... is the Selmer also 7mm? I know the Buffet is 7mm, but I know Selmer USA (and Bundy) use a close inch measurement, can't remember if larger or smaller, and at least for a while Selmer Paris used that same size. I've tried mixing and matching a Selmer and Buffet but can't remember if one was too loose or one was too large.

Re the wood peg, my first long peg was made of wood. I recommend adding a ferrule, at least near the end but preferably a few more, down to a bit below where the metal rod reaches. An ugly but functional way to do that is using hose clamps.
Sliding on and off might be nice, but there's no problem putting it on a stand with the long peg (I've done that many times). Unless you're scared of doing that, or your stand doesn't allow it I guess.

I later made one from stainless steel rod and also for a few others. I make them from slightly larger diameter and only turn some length to fit the holder. They are less flexible that way.

Hurstfarm,

I've tried to find 7 mm. rod on-line with very little success.

A Selmer bass does require a metric size for the peg and there was no one willing to sell a small piece unless I was a business (many suppliers sell only wholesale). Home Depot and other similar stores do not carry metric sizes and using an Imperial size rod does not fit snuggly enough so that it can be tightened.

I don't remember where I got my 7mm rod but it may have been McMaster-Carr.

I made a longer peg for use when standing. I used 9/32 drill rod It's a little larger (.28125") than 7mm (.2755") and was a snug fit but worked fine in both my LeBlanc and Rienouour Bass clarinets and is a lot more available in the US than metric. I also got a 36" length of .281" (9/32) pultruded carbon fiber rod It appears to be as stiff as the steel rod but is considerably lighter. Its more costly than a metal rod ($20.49 from goodwinds.com) Not including shipping. For an end cap I used something called a vacuum cap from the hardware store. You can also use one of the small toy "Superballs" from a "Dollar" store. Drill it partway through for a snug fit.
