Screw Block/Screw Board Template

Hello all,

I recently made my own screw block and template for instrument repairs. Since I couldn't find an electronic template elsewhere, I made one myself and wanted to share for anyone to download on here. You may print the PDF as is, which gives a template that prints approximately 4" x 5 7/8". Alternatively, I will gladly email anyone the Microsoft Powerpoint file (used to design the template) to resize or adjust the template to your liking. For those interested, I'll include some details about how I made it to save you time in figuring, should you make one too.

I used a #43/.089 drill bit for each of the hinge screw locations, and a #50/.070 bit for the pivot screws. I chose these based on trial and error, and the drill choices could be adjusted based on how tightly you'd like the screws to sit in the block. The same goes for drill depth, which I didn't even bother to measure -- I simply found a comfortable depth on my drill press and locked it there for all of the holes.

Directly below the 3 "Misc" holes, there is a perfect space for a small well to store extra parts like springs or adjustment screws. I drilled mine with a 5/8" forstner bit to approximately 1/4" deep, and drilled a smaller hole in the center for a small neodymium magnet, covering the entire bottom of this hole with a piece of black self-adhesive felt. Not necessary, but a useful touch.

Finally, the paper template was glued to this block of wood (though plywood or scrap MDF would work great here), and sealed with several coats of a clear acrylic sealer.

These are only suggestions, and I would encourage anyone to share their take on this simple project, improving as necessary. This probably isn't cheaper than the commercially available screw blocks unless you have all the tools and consumables on hand, but it is customizable.
