 Bass Clarinet Cases?
Author: ZGriffin

Does anybody have a good recommendation for a bass clarinet case for a Low C Buffet Prestige? The bass clarinet moves quite a bit in the case and something stricter on horn movement would be great! Thank you!

If you're a bit handy, you can gut the interior of your current case, buy some "Kaizen foam" (either two 1"-thick slabs or one 2"-thick slab) from a supplier, and make your own form-fitting custom interior. Here's a video:

I've made a few, works very well and you can do it all in an hour or less.

Mine came with a bam. Great case. Lots of storage places, shoulder strap, back pack straps, side and end handles. Side pocket will hold music folders and more.

I use the stock Buffett case but put a towel over the keys, mostly to prevent tarnishing of the silver. I have a long cloth swab that lies on top of the towel along with a soprano clarinet swab for the neck. With all this extra packing, the instrument has always seemed secure.

For the BAM Case, is there a lot of room for the bass to move around?

I just got a Wiseman case, and love it. I have the type A case, and it holds 2 sopranos and the bass quite nicely and snugly. There's not a lot of room for extra stuff in this one though.

Mine doesn't seem to move around at all. I can't feel it "clunking" or moving when carrying it. Lots of padding.

My Buffet case doesn't hold it quite as snuggly as I want it too. One option could be to make some smaller closed cell foam cutouts to fill the areas where the case doesn't make enough contact. The total DIY has already been mentioned - gutting the existing padding under the suede and replacing it and cutting the new foam to exactly the correct dimension.

As far as case recommendations go BAM makes pretty decent cases for bass clarinet but my next case investment will be a Wiseman London. Had my hands on one of their cases for bassoon this morning that was a few years into its life and it was holding up great. The leather was top notch, all the velcro had many years left in it, overall I could tell it was definitely worth the price point they come in at.
