 No name clarinet

Just a curious question. Yesterday I found an older wood clarinet at a local thrift store. There are no markings or serial numbers anywhere on the instrument. It was in an Artley case, but it may not be the original case. The instrument doesn't look too worn so I don't think the logo has worn off. Was this a common practice to make unmarked instruments?

Just curious.
