Ron,
Just to be clear - you're using the Hercules stand?
Tucker,
Thanks for the further details. You've definitely got me leaning towards the Hercules.
Hank,
I did follow that thread with some interest. All the bass clarinets I've ever played on had pegs. I learned on an instrument which had a peg and no strap options. As a kid, I thought the peg was a fun mechanical piece to dink around with. However, on that school-owned instrument, the tightening mechanism was so worn that the instrument would suddenly drop six inches in the middle of playing if I didn't get it tightened "just so."
When I bought my first "professional" bass, it had a dependable peg, plus the option for the neck strap. I tried using both and found it awkward - so I went back to just using the peg.
I might end up adding a peg to this clarinet at some point in the future, but so far, I'm really enjoying playing with just the neck strap. The instrument seems really light and maneuverable to me. If my thumb starts hurting, or other problems show up - I'll add a peg. However, I don't want my decision of which stand to buy, to dictate my need for a peg.
