Crazy bass clarinet register key problem

Hi all,

One of my sophomores has a Yamaha YCL-221 bass clarinet, and the craziest thing happens with it. The register key is always extremely delayed or sometimes does not lift at all when the mechanism is pressed. I have looked at it and it looks perfectly fine; the pad is not sticky and all rods and springs are screwed in and are in working order. The really crazy thing is that one of my juniors has the same model bass clarinet and supposedly the same thing happens to hers as well. In fact, we have five of this same exact model (three are students', two are "borrowed" from a nearby middle school) and I'm concerned that this is some sort of manufacturing problem. Does anyone know if I'm just missing some simple key oil fix or if this is a bigger problem?
