To each his own. I don't spend more than about 30 seconds using either tool on a particular reed, but to great effect. I get about double the number of playable reeds from a box, and the playability of several of those reeds is greatly enhanced. I don't go in for complex tracking or break-in procedures. I have some degree of faith that I would get more from my reeds if I did, but I KNOW I get more from my practice time by keeping it simple.

I have heard about top level pros who gets unlimited free reeds as part of their endorsement deals and do more or less as you do - play each one once and discard immediately if not perfect. I imagine they might go through a box or two or three just to find a single reed that meets their standard. That sounds pretty tedious in its own way.
