 Confessional..........
Author: Paula S
Date:   2015-03-06 05:13

Oh dear bethren............... please forgive me for I have sinned...... yes really sinned.
In a moment of absolute madness I went over to the dark side.........
YESSS........ the double reed!

The oboe player in the orchestra left and also the first player in the concert band I play in moved to new pastures.

It all started when I was invited to play in a crumhorn consort several months ago.
I had never even seen one before but had fantastic fun playing soprano. I grew to like that double reed embouchure manipulating feeling........ even through a wooden lid.

Then I had to know what it was like...... lip on reed........... so yes... I went in gently.......... bought a professional oboe reed and did that toot toot..... crowing 'C' and avidly looked at all the vids on You Tube relating to oboe embouchure LOL
The when I could crow a C all down the reed........ I went into operation oboe buying mode. Just a restored B and H Imperial but...... you know........ I am lovin' it.........

I wlll release the beast when I am really happy with it...... I am in the closet at moment.

Yes I know LOL :-)

I must express you my deepest admirations for having the guts to deal with a finicky instrument that is dependent on reed hacking...

That being said, I wish I played the oboe.... it is quite the instrument!!!

You have not gone to the dark side, but rather to the light side.

Let me know how the progress comes... if all goes well, I might also come over. :-)

Congratulations again!!

The crumhorn is a musical instrument of the woodwind family, most commonly used during the Renaissance period. In modern times, there has been a revival of interest in Early Music, and crumhorns are being played again.

I blew a friend's crumhorn once. The pitch was really unstable. Like it went a tone up or down depending how hard you blow. Are they all like that?

Did you buy the ebonite one that's been on ebay for months? I'd imagine it's a pretty decent instrument.

It's OK, Paula. Our own Chris Peryagh is evidently quite an oboist as well as a clarinetist. On a much lower level I've taken up oboe myself, both playing and repairing (in fact, used an unexpected day off from work yesterday to do a complete restoration of a nice old full-Conservatory oboe).

As with learning languages, there are many benefits to learning other instruments.

To really go over to the dark side, take up bassoon!

Paula, can you post a photo of your Imperial oboe so I can see exactly which system you have - they made several different systems (all with ring keys) but some were thumbplate, some conservatoire, some dual system, some with simple 8ve keys, some semi-automatic and some fully automatic, so a bit of a mixed bag there.

Have you made your bushel basket of reeds yet?
I'm still intimidated by reedmaking, a necessity: Oboe-50% Instrument, 50% reed.
It's given me some new insights on breathing
but it was hard for me to fathom exhaling, and then playing a couple more measure before inhaling.

Double reed is one reed too much.
Single reed is more or less the same.

A high school friend of mine in band quit clarinet in college and switched to oboe. Everyone was shocked, but he seemed ok. Then, later on, he switched to English Horn. Now people were worried. The last I heard he had moved to Thailand.

I only took up playing oboe so I could play cor which is a much nicer instrument to play - far more forgiving than oboe and will let you get away if your reed isn't completely up to scratch.

If anything, I'm annoyed that I'm doing far more oboe playing than clarinet or sax nowadays as it's the most frustrating instrument to play - not only are the fingerings of an other era, but the reeds will try the patience of a saint as they have to be right otherwise you're in for a tough time.

There's the old joke...

Two saxophones...

What do clarinetists use for birth control?

Their personalities.

"A critic is like a eunuch: he knows exactly how it ought to be done."

CLARINET, n.
An instrument of torture operated by a person with cotton in his ears. There are two instruments that are worse than a clarinet -- two clarinets

I believe the definition of clarinet as an instrument of torture is by Ambrose Bierce.

That was funny but off topic. This thread is about reeds. I change it to make it on topic.

Why are there more oboists than clarinetists?
They double breed.

"This thread is about reeds"

1) Someone should make WEED Reeds for really HIGH notes.

2) I need an investor for my new music stand company

Upon taking double reeds methods while studying Music Ed at University, I also developed an affinity for playing double reeds. I feel like I cheated, though...I bought good synthetic reeds which really helped develop embouchure formation and control, since I wasn't fighting an unresponsive reed. It was actually surprisingly easy, once you knew how.

Unfortunately, a good used intermediate oboe or bassoon costs several times what an intermediate clarinet would...or I'd already have one of each to noodle around with.

And, lest we forget, a bassoon is better than an oboe--having more wood, it burns for much longer.

What's the easiest way to get an oboist to play A flat?

Hide their electronic tuner.
