The subject of cracks in wood clarinets comes up frequently but I recently purchased a clarinet with a repaired barrel that used a repair procedure I've not seen previously. Evidently the rings were removed, the crack opened up with a micro saw and a sliver of a different wood inserted, glued and the rings reattached. I assume that the softer wood acted as a cushion for the subsequent movement of the original wood.
