I'm moving across the US and need to pack my Buffet R13. I have a lot to transport and I'm not sure whether I can fly with my clarinet and all my luggage. Would the clarinet be ok in the moving truck (PA to CA) and then in storage for about 2-3 weeks?
Would it be better to mail the clarinet to myself rather than bring it on the plane or in the moving truck?
It makes me a bit sick even posting this because I take really good care of the instrument, but when moving cross country, it's just hard to carry every thing!

Most airline companies will actually let you carry on a musical instrument in addition to a carry on bag. Check with your specific airline to see if they do this. Otherwise just put a humidifier in the case and you should be fine.

However you ship or carry it- or even if you weren't moving- you need to have replacement value insurance on it. That could be on a relatively inexpensive "personal articles floater" or perhaps listed under a homeowner or renter policy. Check with your agent. That way you're not in the position of getting reimbursed 50 cents per pound or some such nonsense if it disappeared in the move.

If you were to consider posting it to yourself, I receive and post clarinets all over the world and I've never yet had one damaged in transit. If it's packed and marked appropriately I'd consider that to be a viable option. Do make sure its insured for replacement value.

From MANY recent moves I can tell you that short term storage does NOT guarantee reasonable storage temperatures (they warn about the gel mattresses and such). So, no I would NOT let a clarinet go into storage.
I know you are looking at moving a lot of stuff but a clarinet is pretty small. Couldn't one other thing (like a suitcase of clothes you could live without for two weeks) take it's place on the truck. I always fly with my clarinet under the seat in front of me.....never had a problem.

I'd take it with you on the plane. They might charge an extra fee or they may make you store something else under the plane so you can carry your clarinet, but the only 100% safe way to take it is to keep it with you at all times. It's an expensive instrument. It would cause me more stress not having it with me than carrying the extra weight around with me would.

When I made the big move from Australia back to Canada, I contemplated shipping my clarinet. In the end I decided to take it on the plane with me. Just as well because the arrival of all our shipped belongings in Vancouver was delayed several weeks. In one way that worked out as we had rented a house just as our things were arriving so it saved us storage cost. However, if my clarinet had been in the container I would have missed out on the opportunity to join an orchestra almost as soon as we arrived here.
If you want to make sure it arrives safe and sound, and in a timely manner, I suggest you take it on the plane with you.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I'll probably take it on the plane, or ship it separately. I also have a small dog and a computer that need to go with me.This is a tough prioritization!
