I used to love the 1980 'Hammer House of Horror' series as a kid (still do!). I like the way they don't have a constant soundtrack which seems to be the norm nowadays, but use incidental music for effect at significant moments instead of bombarding and distracting the viewer throughout.

Another favourite was the BBC's 1981 adaptation of 'The Day of the Triffids': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nJNkZS4jjk - a fair bit of it was filmed in West Sussex (Climping beach and the Shipley http://www.horshampub.co.uk/countryman.php) and Pulborough is mentioned.
