 filling a crack on bell
Author: paker

I read older how-to posts and I think I can follow the instructions. I still have one question. My crack is about 1 mm wide, full length and full depth. Do I still need to wedge open it? Or is the instruction for narrow cracks?

I don't have a worthless clarinet part lying around. Will somone sell me a piece of grenadilla wood? Thanks.

If the crack is 1mm wide for the entire length and won't close, then you'll have to fill it in the same way you'd fill any cracks, chips, slots or holes in grenadilla.

My filler of choice is superglue and wood dust as this is workable almost immediately and provided the grenadilla power used matches the rest of the joint as near as possible, the repair will be hard to see once it has been finished both inside and out.

For the purposes of filling a crack, it doesn't matter too much if the wood used to produce the dust is actually grenadilla, as long as the colour is a close match. The dust is only being used as a filler/colourant. I once used an old briar pipe for this purpose, and it worked just fine. I drilled the burnt wood out of the bowl first, until I was through to virgin wood and then just ground the bowl into powder with a sanding disc.

Thanks for the tips. I am still looking for someone who would sell a piece of wood to me. Thanks again.

Call in to your local instrument repair place and see if they'll let you have an old joint from their junk box. You might have to pay a couple of bucks, but it will last you for the rest of your life.

You can always use the wood that is on the instrument by sanding around the crack with 400 3X grit sandpaper and creating a little pile which you can move over the crack and add your thin cyanoacrylate glue.

Thanks. I found ferrees tool sells a bag of grenadilla chips for $4.50 or so. I doubt I will use even 1/10 of it. If a fellow hobbyist of this forum needs a small amount of wood chip, I will gladly share mine, no cost.
