 Cracked/Split ring on Ridenour Barreljoint
Author: clariniano

Hi everyone, during my practicing today the lower ring of my Ridenour barrel, which I've had for 4 years, fell apart from the rest of the barrel.

I have two questions:

1) Anyone else have this problem with this barrel? (this is the one that retails for about $80 in Canada, I bought it on a gift card from Long and Mcquade from a friend)

2) Can it be glued back on? The ring is only split in one place. (I'm doing a clarinet workshop at a school this coming Monday) I can't use the original barrels my instruments came with, the old one on the B flat cracked twice and the one for the A is really wobbly.

I'm sure if you talk to Tom Ridenour about it he can fix the barrel.

My Ridenour Ivorolon barrel also split its lower ring, due to my boneheaded attempt to install it on a Conn whose upper tenon was too big around for the barrel to fit.

I did contact Mr. Ridenour about the ring--he said he would be happy to fix the cracked ring, but didn't have replacement rings available. I ended up repairing the ring myself with some Super Glue, and have had no problems since.

Cheers, Ursa

It may not even be the too-big tenon Ursa: I used mine on a Yamaha B flat and a Leblanc A, and thanks for saying that yours also split.

I fixed mine with super glue and it worked. Would not have been able to take it to Ridenour, living in Canada and needing it for Monday.

If anyone else reports problems with this barrel's rings cracking and splitting I'll bring it up to Ridenour. Did with a local mouthpiece maker here, which one of my students several years ago had a mouthpiece that chipped for no apparent reason after only a couple of months, and she was a student who was careful about how she maintained, put together, and took apart her instrument, and then found out that other people had issues with those mouthpieces.

My teacher has about four or five of them that I know of. His former student has one and the bottom ring is no longer on it. I have one that has no rings in it anymore (which belongs to him). One on his desk is missing the bottom ring. The one he uses only has the top ring. There is a 65mm barrel with both rings intact, though there's a crack forming in the bottom ring.

No complaint, because I think the extra weight is actually a dampening factor on the sound, but it does look strange to only have one ring on the barrel.

I noticed a "line" on the ring of the one I have. My impression is that the rings are not true rings but are only cosmetic "wraparounds" that are glued at the ends.

I reduced the upper joint cork diameter slightly, with 600 sandpaper, on my Ridenours because I used his Ivorlon barrels and thought that the rings on them were mainly for acoustic and cosmetic purposes, with little mechanical strength. I was lucky, having had no porblems with them.

Both the top and bottom white plastic rings on my Ridenour Ivorolon barrel have peeled off at different times and without any obvious event. Both have had to be glued back in place but Super glue seems to lose its grip on the barrel after a while. Before gluing there was no appreciable change in the sound of my instrument (Leblanc Opus II, Forestone reed)
