Ran into a newly listed Kohlert - Winnenden Bass Clarinet "could be restored by a good technician" Buy It Now- $75. You may well ask "what could possibly go wrong?", but I didn't: had to type fast to keep Dave S. from stealin' it!!

Well, as Meg Whitman found out while she was spending some of my (and Dave S.'s ) money to become California's new Gov., 'shite happens': in my case, the plastic baggy that I hoped would contain ALL the parts missing from the horn, was itself missing a few [frown]. Worst was a missing 29mm cup, lever, axle, and 2 posts on the lower joint. I decided to make this part first, so the project wouldn't get "back burnered' or 'top shelved'.

The picture contains all five steps in one photo: (a) cut out a 29mm disk (plus 7mm for the lips) out of german silver (I get mine from Track of the Wolf.com, a muzzleloader builder supply house). (b) make a 'punch' out of steel, to match the inside of the cup (c) smash that punch into a block of lead about 1/8" deep. (d) carefully center the nickle-silver disk over the dent in the lead block and use the 'punch' to form the cup. Several vigorous blows with a 12lb sledge needed here, I was lucky, and didn't miss! (e) finish form the cup by smashing it through the 30mm chamfered hole in the 1/4" stell square washer on the left. (f) epoxy the cup to the punch, so you can put 'er back on the lathe for finish trimming, shaping, sanding and polishing. Heat to 500 F. and the finished cup drops off the punch. DONE . Now there's the small matter of the lever, posts, etc., but thats another story.
