 what is going on

i dont play the clarinet THAT much everyday, but today i started playing clarinet and i was really fatigued. I had to take a breath every measure, and my tone sounded horrible. I sounded better after resting and playing 2 hours later, but then after awhile it got bad again.

Does this happen to anyone else? Where you usually play fine, but on a random day you just don't have it.

It's usually called a "bad reed day." :-)

Don't take the stairs two at a time. Sit quietly for 3 minutes. Drink some water. Take deep breaths. Then take a nap.

I had that problem a couple of years ago over several weeks--turned out I had bronchitis.

I have 3 reasons:

1. You're still a beginner/intermediate level player and you don't practice much. Thus, your embouchere could not be quite developed and stabilized yet. So it might not be used to playing yet.

2. (This is most likely) Your reed is the issue. As reeds are made of can,e it is quite instable. Being that you don't play often you probably havent broken in reeds or adjusted htme properly. So when you do play, the reeds change slightly. As reeds get older, their makeup starts to change slightly. Sometimes, reeds will get stiffer as they get older.

3. (Second most likely) You get tired as you play so you are starting to bite down/pinch on the reed without knowing it. You do this because your embouchere is getting tired and it's trying extra hard to keep the MP in hte same position. As you clamp down on the reed, you are constricting the airflow. That might be why you're blowing so hard.

Could have been the reed. It could have not been on correctly and therefore took much too much air to vibrate. It could also be water logged of just plain bad. Of course it could have been many other reasons that one can't tell without actually seeing and hearing you play. There are so many things you could be doing wrong. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
