 some questions about refacing mouthpieces

1. what exactly is refacing a mouthpiece? what is done to the mouthpiece?

2. How do you know if your mouthpiece needs refacing?

3. How is it possible to reface a mouthpiece without the person who plays it?

4.....I have a 5RV Lyre profile 88 mouthpiece that I like a lot. The only problem is that the bottom of the reed never lays on the table straight. If I put it on straight, then the tip of the reed is off. Does this mean it needs refacing? Also, my last mouthpiece same kind, was the same way. How could that be? Is it something I should fix or just always put the reed on a little crooked and it wont matter?
