My second flame. Was "Can't hide the facts..."

Mark,

The reason people responded to such an inane post is because there are so many people interested in inane topics and seething to make inane responses...and also many others so eager to let everyone on the list know how stupid or ill informed (inane) others on the list are.

A few people come here to get information because they're new to the clarinet or don't have any people to get help from where they live.

Some come to show us all how much they know about the clarinet and the music world, and to pounce on anyone with differing opinions.

Some come to try to establish themselves as part of a kind of Web-based clarinet intelligentsia by repeated postings.

Some come to argue on and on about equipment because they'd rather equipment shop than practice.

Some use the BBD to communicate only with a few select others, but ignore the rest.

Some, come to see if they can help others.

And so forth.

Then there are those who lurk here waiting for the opportunity to flame.

Me?

I check the board every so often, and occasionally I'll post something that is clearly politically incorrect or clearly in conflict with what the intelligentsia are posting (like my short dialog with you over copyright the other day) just to see whether I'll be ignore, flamed, or told what's what.

Sometimes I post to help someone else with an easy solution to some problem, but I do this infrequently because one easy solution posted on this BBD usually generates five complicated, nitpicky, overly complex alternatives that are more likely to confuse the person with the problem than my response would help.

I see this BBD pretty much as Mr. Pay does, I think. But unlike him, I find this BBD vastly entertaining, watching people expose their personalities and develop their personas here.

I like playing the buffoon so that I can see how you and a few other BBD "authorities" will respond.

It's like stirring up an ant hill with a stick.

B.

This whole discussion reminds me of schoolkids standing around arguing whether Mantle was better than Hank Aaron, or the Babe
Pele better than Beckman
or Montana better than Marino
Manning better than Brady
or Mosconi better than Hoppe or Fats
or 57 Chevy Bel Aire better than the .......you get the idea.

Allan,

IMO, Mantle was better (until he got hurt) the either the Babe or Hank. Mantle was faster-(3 seconds flat home to first), had a great arm (that's why Casey moved him from shortstop to the outfield) and he hit for power from both sides of the plate...Even when terribly hung over (or still slightly inebriated) he could still hit for power, he would just aim for the middle oneā€¦

"Pele better than Beckman"

I'm not sure which one is a better clarinet player but Pele was
waaaaaaaaaaaay better than Beckham in futbol/soccer. No contest.
