 Maslanka's Desert Roads
Author: Dan Oberlin 2017
Date:   2007-04-19 22:22

Last night the Florida State University Symphonic Band (conducted by Patrick Dunnigan) played an all Maslanka concert. The second half of the concert was Maslanka's Symphony No. 4, the first half was a major and fairly new (Feb., 2005) work for solo clarinet and wind band: Desert Roads, Four Songs for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble. The soloist was Peggy Dees, who oversaw the commissioning of the piece, premiered it with the Dallas Wind Symphony, and to whom it is dedicated. Of this work Maslanka wrote "the title 'Desert Roads' suggests an interior journey, a time of inner searching, of not knowing, of creative incubation" and, of the songs, "they are intimate rather than symphonic expressions". I found the piece to be quite beautiful, and I don't
usually warm quickly to very modern music. Both the clarinet and band parts
are very challenging and were very well executed - in particular, Peggy Dees played with a lovely sound and an understated virtuosity which really suited the piece. Your should hear it if you have the chance.
