How many companies make your clarinet setup
Author: clarnibass
Date:   2006-02-01 06:11

The thread about why clarinet companies don't always make good mouthpieces got me to think of this thread (or is it the boredom before rehearsal).

How many different companies do you use when you play? I assume everone has a clarinet, reed, mouthpiece, and some have bells and barrels by different companies, and some use neckstraps, etc.

This is not supposed to be another 'what's your setup' thread, and let's keep it for Bb clarinet.

I'll start. Two companies make my whole setup. One for the clarinet (including barrel and bell) and mouthpiece, and another for reeds and ligature.

P.S. I'm wondering if it is possible to have it minimized to one company (not that it would better or anything to minimize it)? I don't know if there is a company that makes both clarinets and all accessories (maybe Selmer?).

The short: 6

The long:

7 (6 at a time): Buffet, Backun, Richard Hawkins, Rovner, Vandoren/Gonzalez, BG (strap).

Getting further into accessories, I regularly have accessories, components, etc. from: K&M (stand and pegs), The Doctor (grease, swab), Sawday & Holmes (latest recork), Korg, Manhasset, an art store (reed water vial), Pyne (knife), Protec, Target (rubber band to hold down the B in the case), unknown (other swab). That makes 17. On a considerable stretch, you might count the music folder and very nice pencil, hitting 19. Counting music publishers, I think, is going too far.

But to make a long story short (too late), I suppose my magic number is 6 companies for "major components attached to the clarinet while I am playing it".

Thankfully, nothing is currently held together with dental floss or electrical tape.

Good one! Reed, moutpiece, ligature, instrument all from different manufacturers (as far as I know, you never know for sure with modern branding practices).

Six - mouthpiece, ligature, reed, barrel, tuning ring, clarinet.

Eight - If you count cork grease and swab

Then there's the timber, pads, corks, felt, glue, shellac, screws, springs, turned metal parts, cast metal parts, stamped metal parts, nickel silver tubing and solid nickel silver bar, plastic parts, silver solder, plating, etc. that are all sourced from different companies.

And all the machinery and tools involved in making a single instrument.

Mouthpiece, Reed, Ligature, Barrel, upper/lower joint, bell

I'm the US Contact for the Galper Register Tube/Key so that would have been 7, but it didn't work out for my setup so I don't use it.

Someone using a strap would go above 6 though.

the dental floss I use when a tenon cork goes is manufactured by Oral B.

Not sure why Vandoren discontinued its dental floss.
