 International shipping

Hi

This is not directly related to clarinet, or music for that matter, but I think the people here are very knowledgable so you might be able to help me.

I had very important sheet music sent to me in regular mail from France (to Israel). It seems it got lost in the mail or something. I would like to ask the person to send it in express mail or a fast service with a tracking number. The problem is I can't ask her to pay the (probably very) expensive price of the express shipping. Is there a way to send something and have the receiver pay when it arrives? If that is possible, what company provide such a service?

I have heard of Fedex, UPS, but never used them and I'm sure there are more companies.

Thanks very much.

That could be arranged with FedEX or UPS. It's called "COD."

By the way, I just returned from Israel. Where are you located and what kind of playing do you do?

OK thank you Brenda. I contacted Fedex and UPS (and another company called DHL someone just told me about) and asked them about this service.

I've played only classical music for a long time until I switched to jazz and now I'm a student in the Jerusalem Music Academy, in what's called the multi-subject performance department (it is basically jazz performace). We also study other subjects like arranging, music for films, etc.
Recently I recorded with two groups. One played original composed stories by Israeli author Etgar Keret for narrator accompanied by jazz band (three saxes, clarinets, bass, drums, tuba, piano, trumpet), and the second group was a trio of flute, clarinets, and bass playing avantgade jazz.
Both groups just stopped working so now I'm working on getting a group to play the piece Green Dolphy Suite by Louis Sclavis (and some other pieces by French clarinetists), which has three players playing clarinet and bass clarinet plus violin, cello, and bass.
I also play in a class for improvised music and dance, which is very interesting.
I like to play mostly original jazz, modern jazz, and improvised music (which doesn't necessarily mean atonal unrhythmic music).

How about you Brenda? Also it would be interesting to know what you did in Israel.

If this is not the place for this then you can email me to clarnibass@yahoo.com

Thanks and best wishes.

I was in Israel from Oct. 4th until Oct. 29th. Each year I am there for approximately a month playing clarinet with the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ) during their celebration of Succot (or Tabernacles). We do a week of concerts, some of which are at the ICCJ (International Conference Center Jerusalem). I've been playing with them since 1994. There are only 2 clarinets each year. I live in Texas and the other clarinet this last year lives in Jerusalem, but she is from the Netherlands. We do Christian music, classical and Israeli. Part of the orchestra is composed of professional musicians who live in Israel--often Russian immigrants--who are hired according to how many we need to fill up the orchestra. The rest of the orchestra is composed of people from all over the world--Texas (me), S. Africa, England, Russia, Moldovia, Ukrain, Finland, Germany, etc. This year the woodwind section consisted of an oboe player from Germany, a flute from the Netherlands, a flute from the USA, myself and the Dutch clarinetist. We also have an international choir and dancers. The productions are quite elaborate.

I find it difficult in Israel for many reasons--the water--I always get sick the first couple of days because I forget and brush my teeth with it instead of using the bottled water. Also our schedule is quite demanding. We do one outdoor concert (this year was at Sultan's Pool) there were over 7,000 in attendance, and the rest indoors. We stay at the Yitzak Rabin Guest House, so we have to be sure we have food stored in our rooms for Shabbat and other holidays. I'm always without a car, so it's walking or a taxi from there. Although there are lots of challenges my husband and I go back each year and look forward to the next time. We've made many friends and I enjoy playing with the ICEJ each year.

Hi Brenda & everyone who reads this.

It's interesting to hear. I am very close to Sultan's Pool, but I didn't know about your concert. Maybe next time you come here you can let me know and I'll come to hear you play, that would be great.
About the water, yes they are bad. Every time I come to the USA or Europe I am amazed how great the water is. But still, I drink tap water and they are fine. I guess I'm used to it. You are the first person I hear that brushes their teeth with bottled water [grin]

There are a few places open on Saturday like Mcdonalds and others but I guess you have to know the area to find them.

I don't know that specific orchestra but a lot (maybe even most) of the musicians here are are from the former USSR.

Thank you very much for your help about the shipping. It turns out those companies don't have international Cash On Delivery service, but I can pay with a credit card before shipping. The price is rediculous, over $100 for a small letter. I guess I'll just wait and hope it didn't get lost in the mail, and I'll start transcribing it (maybe with the help of a teacher).

Thanks again and best wishes.

Small world.

My wife and I were also in Israel at the same time. It was our first trip...and we can't wait to go back. I recommend it highly no matter what your religion (even athiests can find much to enjoy), and don't let anyone scare about the security issues. Succot is good time to be there...weather is nice, and everyone carries a lulav.

A lady who played french horn with the group you mentioned chatted with us on the plane ride back (we went through Toronto from Pittsburgh on Air Canada...a convient route to take). She was very proud of one of her students who went on to study with Clevenger, and is now in an orchestra position.

We did not have a problem with the water, except when I got some Dead Sea "water" splashed in my eye.

We attended a matinee concert of the Israel Philharmonic (All Sibelius program).

Alseg, You were talking to my very good friend Cecile Thompson. Yes, she and I have played together since 1994 and we are very, very close friends. She also used to teach clarinet and was a band director. She's quite an accomplished French Horn player, no matter what she may have said about herself (very modest). She always flies Air Canada. She's wonderful to work with and has helped me a lot in learning the ropes of life in Israel.

What a small world!

I agree that Succot is an excellent time to visit. That's when we're there.

But, Clarnibass, we usually don't have a car (use taxis) because our schedule doesn't give us much of a break (8-10 hour rehearsals every day), so renting a car is a waste of money. We can usually get several people together to get down to Ben Yehuda street. So on Shabbat we usually are invited to someone's home (we have several sets of friends who live there). If not, we try to stash food in our room. But, when I got sick with my stomach (I'm an Irritible Bowel sufferer), it made things more difficult. That's why I brush with the bottled water.

Allan--do you think there'll ever be a cure for IBS?

Clarnibass, this would have been the scene from Sultan's pool on Oct. 16th.
You can't see the orchestra because we're in the "pit." But, surely you noticed all the fireworks.
