 European Mouthpiece Makers

There is a lot of talk on this board about the American "custom" mouthpiece makers, but I'm curious as to who the top makers are in Europe (French style). Any thoughts?

I think that Viotto is one of the most popular european makers.

I have just had a custom mouthpiece made for my boxwood clarinets by Ed Pillinger in London. I'm really happy with the finished product, and he was very helpful, knowledgeable and quick. Highly recommended!

Pomarico of Italy makes fine glass/crystal mps, for Bb and bass cls in particular, my newest is for my alto cl, its facing is VG. They may make sax mps also, ask Riccardo by EM from their website. An "independent" mp refacer etc?, Manfredo Cavallini [near Rome?] refaced several Bbs to known maker's dimensions for me, very good. I'm sure there are many more. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Rod,
You mention Viotto mouthpieces, but it seems that their US distributor is off line. Any idea who's distributing them now?

Clarinet -

I have also noticed that, and unfortunately have no idea what to tell you. The mouthpeices that were previously available form Oliva Clarinet Resource (which as you mentioned is currently offline for whatever reason), are actually significantly different from the ones you can get from the european exporter.

Perhaps someone on the Bboard knows what the situation is with that.

why not email viotto in reference to a US distributor? When I was looking at Amati clarinets, emails worked fine for me (although you may have to wait a day or three for a reply)

Viotto mouthpieces are very popular. You could contact Bas de Jong, about information of the US dealer Bas de Jong...Bas is the European distributor and member/sponsor of the Bboard. Maybe he knows who distributes them in the US.

I was more interested in custom makers...ie - the "Kaspar" of Europe.

Oh yeah, there's another maker who seems to have gained popularity in the last couple of years, I think he makes cheap clarinets as well, but can't remember his name. I think it's something like Henry Salmon - a French bloke if I remember rightly, he has a small workshop in his garden somewhere in Paris where he makes things.

Yeah, he made a student saxophone once, but that was recently (the 'Mark 6' I think - not very good as no-one ever used them due to the ancient and unergonomic keywork and poor tuning), but he's stopped making them now as they didn't sell well, now they're all made in China as they make better ones.

Didn't Henry Salmon live near George Thewhite? Thewhite was known for his clarinets, although he never became famous for mouthpieces. Funny that all three famous French clarinet makers lived so close geographically. (oh, I forgot to mention the other one: Dennis Eatasmuch-Asulike)
