Mike, I would have to answer your deserted island question with the name of an artist. I would have to pick Naftule Brandwein. Dave Tarras is also very good. Both of these clarinetists were sort of "pioneers" of klezmer music in America from the 1920's onward. I'd look for albums by these artists if possible. For a klezmer clarinetist, these old recordings are a goldmine. They're just packed full of wholesome goodness. As far as mordern klezmer clarinetists, I would have to mention Andy Statman and Giora Feidman. There are others, and other groups, but these guys are all excellent clarinetists, and their recordings tend to focus on clarinet. Do keep in mind that I am a clarinetist, and these are good klezmer clarinet recordings. For klezmer in general, you may want to check out some othe artists as well. -- Nate Zeien
