Something else to consider is the option of doubling in jazz bands (if you're interested).  Many professional jazz musicians play both sax and flute--this way when a jazz piece calls for flute, they don't have to "hire" another musician.  So, it is a very common thing for a musician to double up on sax and flute.  And yes, the fingerings are similar.  The embouchure change will take some getting used to though!  I wouldn't recommend practicing sax for a long time before you practice flute--plan your practice time wisely!  ;-)
