Alto sax sounds a Major 6th down from written pitch. C Tenor sounds an octave below if reading treble. there for you must write the part up a minor 3rd to sound the same pitch and octave

HUH?!?!? that makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. And this is not a C tenor, it's a C melody, I'm told there is a difference. The sax I have is supposed to play from piano music (but not two lines at once of course).

Well, if you want to be reading your old alto sax music on the new C Melody sax, you'll have to learn how to transpose in your head. Basically, if you read everything up one line (or space if it's on a space) and add 3 flats to the key signature (each flat cancels out a sharp), it should work. In other words, if your old alto sax music was in the key of C major, and you saw a G on the page, you would read it (for the C Melody sax, that is) as in the key of E-flat major (3 flats added to 0) and you would play a B-flat (one line above a G, don't forget the flat from the key signature). Of course, all this would be avoided if you just read the sax line from the piano score, assuming it was in concert pitch (sometimes they transpose the solo line, sometimes they don't, you just have to check. If the solo sax line is in the same key as the piano, then it is in concert pitch, and you can play the part with your new C Melody). Good luck.
